Gamifying Algorithms

Sep. - Nov. 2020

How might a gamified tool help both adults and children understand how algorithms work? The first step in answering this question was to learn about algorithms myself. I created a taxonomy of algorithmic design paradigms each with a standardized definition and example to refer back to through the design process. To aid in my exploration, I built a framework that would randomly pair one algorithmic paradigm with a familiar toy or game. Through multiple rounds of this ideation, I remixed a series of games that would explain the operations of algorithms through their gameplay.

My final product, a deck of trading cards with personified algorithms, was not a culmination of this exploration but rather a point of reflection as I reached the limits of my expertise.
