Mitigating the loss of North Carolina culture
Oct. - Nov. 2018

Low-income communities want to maintain and grow the culture they’ve created through decades of establishing roots but old and new systemic issues result in disinvestment and the struggle to keep the culture alive. This disinvestment leads to appropriation, erasure, and replacement by the wealthy resulting in a destructively homogeneous and stagnant culture. Making real, impactful change is purposefully convoluted even in models designed for community empowerment.

OBJECTIVE

How can we empower low income communities to mitigate the erasure caused by gentrification in order to maintain an affordable, diverse, and innovative atmosphere?

	<img width="4120" height="3090" width_o="4120" height_o="3090" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/61bbf0d832a55586f75d0b59d4eccac26ccecb5d9b478db021c8621ed74c7850/eye-for-ebony-IiTtcSj8lQ8-unsplash.jpg" data-mid="95429921" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/61bbf0d832a55586f75d0b59d4eccac26ccecb5d9b478db021c8621ed74c7850/eye-for-ebony-IiTtcSj8lQ8-unsplash.jpg" />

	PERSONA

Meet Daniele

Daniele is a 35 year old black woman who was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. She grew up near the neighborhood of Five Points but moved when she was twelve years old to South Raleigh because her parents couldn’t afford the rent as it grew in the mid-1990’s. Daniele wants to stay connected to the community she has called family for many years and for her seven year old daughter to grow up in a safe and creative environment.
Noticing that wealthy homeowners are buying and renovating properties around her, Daniele is worried that what she went through as a child will happen again to her and her family. She is frustrated that new developments, like expensive movie theaters and bars, are popping up dedicated to these new residents rather than providing the resources that this long-standing community truly needs. She is afraid of losing the connection to her roots and community as prices raise around her.

	RESEARCH
Landing on Community Land Trusts
While researching gentrification, coming up with an intervention that put the power into the community's hands was paramount. Throughout the project I was careful to maintain a community-focused scope and not try to take on the challenge of stopping gentrification altogether. A majority of published information about mitigating the effects of gentrification, unfortunately, is geared towards developers and government officials (e.g. building affordable housing or introducing new policies). While looking for other options, I landed on Community Land Trusts (CLTs) as a viable structure to institute because they are a proven, governmentally-recognized solution that empowers communities.

	<img width="1920" height="1380" width_o="1920" height_o="1380" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/21c8b204acae7eb1caacb9512e71335a24050161c12e7d64783ac304d842e1de/028e9189-2919-4daf-8ae1-c43503cf0dc6.png" data-mid="95424144" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/21c8b204acae7eb1caacb9512e71335a24050161c12e7d64783ac304d842e1de/028e9189-2919-4daf-8ae1-c43503cf0dc6.png" /><img width="1920" height="1380" width_o="1920" height_o="1380" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3e7ab53167c47e6ce057ccefd89a8d05d85b1f34b744b290e95104eac98a6dd5/f75ce7be-d1b4-4ba7-9e78-da4b204beddf.png" data-mid="95424157" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3e7ab53167c47e6ce057ccefd89a8d05d85b1f34b744b290e95104eac98a6dd5/f75ce7be-d1b4-4ba7-9e78-da4b204beddf.png" />
Seeing the forest for the trees
Through researching Community Land Trusts, I had a moment of introspection. I realized that, even though I knew that they had been proven to work, I didn’t understand how they worked. The resources that were already available and meant to inform the average person were just as intimidating and full of jargon as legal resources for city-planners. How would a ordinary citizen approach such a complex system? There is a clear need for an accessible guide for citizen on how to establish, grow, and maintain a CLT in their neighborhood.&nbsp;

DEVELOPMENTA brand comes from the woodwork
The main factor I was testing with my low fidelity prototypes was the approachability of the brand. I didn’t want to make the brand too trendy and cater to the young, wealthy people moving into the neighborhoods. On the other hand, I needed to make sure that the brand wasn't too stark and boring as not to look like a government agency. Through many iterations and feedback, I struck a good balance between the two extremes and made the brand warm, welcoming, and familiar. This also translated to my name development. Oakroots was coined to call to mind the tone of strength and historical significance while referencing a common North Carolina tree.

	FINAL PRODUCTMailer: signed, sealed, delivered
The mailer is the first touchpoint in the system that users would interact with. It would be sent to houses across North Carolina who are at risk of being gentrified. Oakroots as a business would be in charge of monitoring these areas. The mailer is designed to get the attention of community members who are already thinking about making change. Once the mailer is opened, the user will find a booklet that explains the what and why of Community Land Trusts. The wording of the booklet is clear and easy to understand. The recipient will also find a postcard to mail back to Oakroots to receive a free guide on setting up their own CLT.&nbsp;

	Guide: an open book
The guide is the main artifact. It consists of five books each giving a comprehensive blueprint of an important section of setting up and maintaining a CLT: Getting to Know CLTs, Engaging the Community, Governance and Legal Structures, and How to Use the CLT for Good Development. Just like the mailer, the guidebooks are written in a simple and approachable format giving the reader clear, step-by-step instructions and information without legal jargon. The brand extends through the pages too— featuring full bleed images and straightforward data visualizations.

	Uncovering The Student Publication

Jan. 2017 - presentThe Student Publication of NCSU's College of Design is one of the oldest student-led design journals in the country. The Student Publication began as a tribute to Matthew Nowicki after his untimely death in 1950 at the age of 40. Since, students have continued the effort, focusing on timely and important issues in the field and inviting some of the most important and influential designers of the day to contribute letters, projects and articles.

CONTEXT

Freeform identity

The Student Publication changes their brand each year to match the newest volume to be produced. In my year of working with them and counting, I've been promoted to the Executive Designer and lead the design team. In this role, I spearhead the development of each new brand and its guidelines. I work with the marketing and editorial team to create promotions for events and productions. My favorite part about working with TSP is their indefinite visual identity so I can design artifacts without many constraints. In working with TSP, I created posts for their social media to gain followers. I’ve also assisted in creating visual content for TSP Volume 38: Flux.

Building trust between dementia patients and their caregivers

Feb. - Apr. 2020

Dementia is a disease that requires constant and unpredictable adaptation that consumes everyone involved: patients, family, and caregivers. A few years after diagnosis, once the symptoms have become a daily obstacle, the demand on the family to care for the patient becomes too great and often a professional caregiver is hired. Along with the shifting challenges inherent with dementia, this caregiver must now build the trust necessary to provide proper care. I partnered with IBM to help overcome these challenges in caregiving using the affordances of machine learning.

OBJECTIVE

How might machine learning be used to
effectively assist a caregiver in maintaining
the autonomy of a patient through the stages
of dementia and increasing caregiver custody?

	CONTEXT

A new way of life

Dementia is a chronic condition whose symptoms can vary drastically throughout its progression. This inconsistency makes it difficult to give medical care to patients and impractical to design any sort of hard and fast interventions. This burden often falls on a typically overlooked stakeholder: the caregiver, whether in the family or professional.

Needing to narrow down somewhere in the disease's timeline, My team and I decided to target the two intermediate stages of dementia caregiving (shifting responsibility and increasing demand) for multiple reasons. These stages mark the time between when symptoms are becoming a daily challenge but before the patient needs full-time care. This is a challenging time for the patient, medical staff, and family because it usually requires significant transitions in treatment and daily care. Since most families can't afford to care for their loved one full-time, a professional caregiver is often hired.

While professional caregivers are trained in navigating the particularities of dementia, they also introduce a few unavoidable obstacles. First, they become the mediator between all other stakeholders: the patient, their family, their doctors, etc. They must be able to translate medical information in understandable terms to all of these parties. This presents a second problem: the ability of a dementia patient to absorb and apply guidance changes rapidly. One day the patient may be able to retain verbal reminders while the next day they may need written cues as well. This problem area is where my team and I decided to focus because it presented a lot of opportunities for design intervention.

“Most times with dementia long-term memory is intact until the very end. So getting people to tell stories from their own past to think in the moment is helpful in grounding them in reality before you have a conversation that requires rational thought. There is potential to see the progress of the patient, not just deterioration.”
Excerpt from a interview with a professional caregiver
“Patient trust serves to reinforce the functioning of a health partnership, thereby increasing the probability of patient satisfaction, treatment adherence, and improved health status, while decreasing the likelihood of withdrawing from a health plan.”(Pearson &amp; Raeke, 2000)

“Storytelling had specific benefits for residents (increased creativity, improved quality of life, positively altered behavior, and involvement in meaningful activity), and caregivers (learning new practices, developing a deeper understanding of residents, involvement in meaningful activity, and thinking creatively around programmatic challenges).”(George &amp; Houser, 2014)

	RESEARCH
Reaching an understanding

An unexpected requirement for a patient's treatment adherence is trust. Similar to bedside manner, a patient's trust in their caretaker affects their medical data retention and understanding. Unfortunately, there is little trust between patients and professional caregivers, often complete strangers. We determined that building trust, empathy, and rapport between the patient and their caregiver would be the best way to improve information delivery and retention.

Through interviews with professional and primary caregivers and secondary research, we found that storytelling is a proven method of building trust. We were essentially connecting two thoroughly researched topics. First, storytelling is helpful for dementia patients as a social activity because it boosted their creativity and helped build empathy with their caregiver. And second, increased trust and understanding between a patient and their caregiver improves data delivery, retention, and adherence because the data can be contextualized and personalized (Fiske et al., 2019).

	Giving it dimension

When considering what format would be best to introduce storytelling into a caregiver's visit with a dementia patient, my team and I kept returning to one point mentioned in our early interviews: “The only thing better than visual aids would be 3D models to help explain something. It engages spatial thinking that many people with certain kinds of dementia have an impairment.” We thought that a three-dimensional object would be both innovative and intuitive for people without much experience with a smartphone. Our final form, the cube, could easily be flipped and turned, paralleling the unfolding nature of stories without superfluous interaction with a digital user interface. Our user testing of the object came to the same conclusion: “This is a whole different area you are working in is their spatial cognitive response and long term memory with the photos. You are also doing short term memory by having pictures on different surfaces and having patients remember where they are.”

	FINAL PRODUCT

Spinning a yarn
On a typical day with a dementia patient, a caregiver will begin their visit by engaging them in a story. A prompt will appear on the cube's home screen to initiate the conversation. These prompts can be customized— preferences like complexity and dependence on memory change automatically with disease progression or manually adjusted.

While the patient tells their story to the caregiver, the cube will begin recording and act as a visual mediator. Pieces of the story appear as images on the faces of the cube once they're mentioned to spark further conversation. Once the patient is finished with their story, the caregiver can archive it or provide feedback on the efficacy of the prompt.

After the storytelling is over, the caregiver reviews with the patient their daily tasks and medical data. The involves relaying recommendations from their doctor, ensuring the patient is taking their medications, checking to see if their house is in order, etc. If the caregiver runs into any issues, the cube recommends a delivery strategy based on the disease progression and past storytelling sessions. For example, if the patient is having trouble adjusting to a new medication routine, the cube may suggest the caregiver remind them of a childhood story they previously told with a moral of resilence. Using past recorded stories to resolve current challenges builds rapport between the caregiver and their patient while also boosting retention and adherence.

	Wider implcations
This design intervention introduces new narrative and spatial methods in dementia care. Leveraging human connection to build empathy through storytelling, especially in three-dimensional form, has never been researched before. It also increases awareness of caregiver’s needs, an often overlooked stakeholder in the medical field. Moving forward, we wonder: How could this three-dimensional, spatial system be used in other contexts? How could our device adapt throughout the entire disease and beyond? How can machine learning further navigate the nuances of dementia?

	Distinguishing Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship

May 2018 - present

The Social Innovation Fellows is a program at NC State University that teaches social innovation and entrepreneurship to students, first-year through Ph.D. from all disciplines and backgrounds. I joined the team just after its inaugural cohort and, over four years and over 100 successful graduates, I've solidified the program's visual presence on campus. I built a unified brand identity system that makes every touchpoint look and feel connected: presentations, agendas, annual reports, posters, social media, you name it!

In addition to branding the program, I've also helped to develop its year-long curriculum, presented workshops and skill labs, and drafted assignments. View the pedagogical work I've done for the Social Innovation Fellows here.

Branding a newly accessible museum

Oct. - Nov. 2016

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is becoming more accessible and wants to reach a new audience. We present a unifying brand and design a system of promotional materials that enhance the entire museum experience.

OBJECTIVE

How can we establish a comprehensive&nbsp;brand and&nbsp;promotional&nbsp;framework that enriches a target audience's&nbsp;museum experience?

	CONTEXT

An accessible foundation

We began by working closely with the NCMNS to define their target audience. The museum wanted to appeal to the disabled community while also maintaining the interest to the stakeholders. They also expressed an effort to introduce issues of inclusion and awareness of ‘disability’ in the general public. Through a tour of the museum, we found that they already offered a wide variety of accessible services including: iBeacon integration for the blind, downloadable app for the deaf, and sensory map for the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) community. We set out to design a brand and promotional structure that empowered the museum’s diverse audience through connotative and persuasive techniques rather than informational and type-driven ones.

	RESEARCH

Understanding the ADA
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 set into motion a new era of accessible design throughout the nation. This civil rights law has a complex legal and social history that we set out to research, explain, and clarify.&nbsp;How can we simplify and explain an intricate narrative of legal, historical, and social significance to a variety of audiences. The system that I designed appealed to three different types of viewers: the passer-by, the light-reader, and the deep-reader.&nbsp;

Developing a strategy

To establish a long-lasting impression on NCMNS's target audience we designed a timeline of integration through the entire visit. We formed user feedback loops recognizing the potential of promotional materials both within and outside of the context of the museum. Taking into account benefits of human-centered interaction and sensory stimulus to the experience of children with ASD, we emphasized physical &amp; tangible interactions between the user and promotional materials and promotional materials within exhibit space.&nbsp;By not&nbsp;focusing our efforts just on potential customers but to current and past visitors as well, we open dialogue between the community and the museum which allows for a simpler, more effective method of attracting greater crowds to the space.

	Building a brand
In order to create an eye-catching brand while still appealing to the ASD and disabled community, we crafted the color, pattern, and typography in tandem and maintained consistency through all of the created artifacts. We chose 5 distinct colors, patterns, and words to have variety and visual interest without losing sense of a unified brand. We decided to use short, bold, action words related to characteristics of dinosaurs as a means of speaking directly to users and relaying a message of empowerment. Each word references a different part of the museum experience while still hinting at the physicality of dinosaurs. Each word is paired with a corresponding pattern and color to create a visual system throughout all the pieces. The simple, yet reptilian patterns establish visual identity and unite different promotional materials.

	FINAL PRODUCT
Mailer: Getting in touch
The first method of attracting new attention to the museum we designed was in the form of a mailer. This would provide potential visitors with information about the main dinosaur exhibit. The cutouts, bold graphics, and bright colors were intended to grab the attention of the receiver rather than being thrown away. This mailer was created in tandem with a participatory installation within the exhibit itself. The mailer included visual instructions and custom patterned paper in order to create your own origami dinosaur. My team and I figured that the main audience of a science museum, especially a dinosaur exhibit, would be children. This&nbsp;portion of the mailer would provide a way for children and the disabled community to interact with their parents or caregivers and further entice them to visit the exhibit together to complete the last step of adding it to the installation.

Brochures: Unfolding the journeyThe branding and promotion seamlessly continued once the audience was in the museum. My team designed five distinct brochures to help guide different groups and show the large amount of services the museum offers. These brochure's topics and aesthetics fit naturally in the brand framework:
ROAM, Travel Through History: map, attractions, and wayfindingTREK, Navigating Your Journey: accessibility information and accommodations for people with disabilitiesSTOMP, Make Your Presence Known: community involvement, programming, and volunteer opportunitiesSOAR, Reach New Heights: educational programs, group tours, and school opportunitiesHATCH, Spark New Creativity: children’s programs, party hostingTo extend their use outside the experience of the museum, the brochures unfolded to reveal a full size poster. This made them&nbsp;more sought after as a collectible which, in turn, gave more information to the visitor. This feature was also intended to extend the lifetime of the artifact into the lives of the visitors outside of the museum. By&nbsp;giving a poster to another person or hanging it on a wall, it&nbsp;reminds people of their good experience and inspires other prospective visitors to go to the museum as well.<img width="5184" height="2916" width_o="5184" height_o="2916" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/62b9d37114af08e1c4f922079b9b67732974166f91a65fb6950837eed277c7a9/21299465-d20e-4194-a295-785df1693e98.jpg" data-mid="95583385" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/62b9d37114af08e1c4f922079b9b67732974166f91a65fb6950837eed277c7a9/21299465-d20e-4194-a295-785df1693e98.jpg" />

Merchandise: Wrapping it upNCMNS original products and their packaging were also considered in our design framework. All artifacts fit into the branding whole while maintaining usability and aesthetic value. Gift wrapping supplies: bags, tissue paper, stickers, etc. were kept simple and graphic by adjusting pattern scale and repetition. The eye-catching nature of the paraphernalia grabs attention and attracts more potential visitors.

	Animations: sticking out
The final element in the timeline we designed to be more widespread and attract people beyond past museum visitors. Customers were given stickers with the museum branding and QR codes that they could independently disperse. This could be placed on their own personal belongings, such as water bottles or laptops, or placed in public spaces for everyone to see. This creates a semi-permanent advertisement that, when in the hands of the customers, can be spread far beyond the typical reach. When someone, whether it's a passer-by or targeted audience member, scans the QR code on their phone or tablet a whimsical animation plays representing both the museum and the possibility of five different dinosaurs interacting with it. The variety of potential animations encourages viewers to watch and share all of them and further extend the brand&nbsp;retention rate.

	CONTEXT

It started in 1953

In mid-August 1953, the Ionian island of Kefalonia, Greece was the epicenter of a series of over 100 disastrous earthquakes. The worst, striking on August 12th, measured at a magnitude of 7.2 and left the island almost entirely demolished. The greatest blow to the island, though, was nearly all of its inhabitants abandoning the wreckage. Standing as a graveyard of ruined, ancient Venetian buildings, the island and its remaining population were at an economic standstill.
Over the next few decades, the island was rebuilt using strict anti-earthquake guidelines. While most of the reconstruction was built with safety in mind over aesthetics, some of the original architecture was restored or, in few cases, left untouched. These skeletons of ancient structures mostly consisted of churches whose sentimental significance was too great for the immensely religious local community. These buildings, vital to the narrative of Kefalonia, are at risk of deterioration, urban development, and a loss of history as the generation of their original congregation dies out.

	Who we're working with
The Hellenic Republic Ephorate of Antiquities of Kefalonia (35th Ephorate) was the archeological team onsite whose main objective is to preserve the history at risk around the island. We worked with the Ephorate to determine a variety of churches in need of documentation and cataloging in different areas through Kefalonia. In the beginning, they taught us the system of documentation they used professionally so that the work that ensued could be easily translated into their previous archive.

Through the instruction of Professor Scott Townsend and in partnership with the Ionion Center for Arts and
Culture, we were also tasked to apply this catalog into a designed artifact to encourage communication in the community in a effort to preserve local, personal accounts of the buildings.

	RESEARCH

Over 3,000 pictures taken
The first step in creating an accurate database for the 35th Ephorate was to visit the sites themselves and document and roughly map everything from wide, panoramic views to micro, architectural details. This usually started with researching the sites online to gather as much data known about them as possible beforehand. This included gathering aerial photographs, discussing with the Ephorate over any important information, and reading about any history that was available. With this knowledge in mind, my team and I would pair up and divide the site into sections— often one person would take the pictures while the other would draw a rough map of the site and record the picture number and where it was taken. Through the eight sites we visited, we captured over 3,000 images.

Building a dialogue

One of the most fascinating parts of working in such a small community was how eager and open people were to assisting us with our research. On many occasions a local priest would drive to the site with us to give us firsthand accounts of the churches and their importance. In some instances, neighbors who lived around the site would walk up to us and give us information. There were times where we were invited into peoples homes for an angle they would think would be good to photograph. These interactions showed how important the work we were doing was to the people and gave us a rich background to what was usually just rubble that was invaluable moving forward.

	FINAL PRODUCTSpirit of the island
Our final maps of the sites were formatted in conjunction with a large database of images. The system of naming and numbering the images and the layout of the map was designed to help orient someone through the space while only having a 2D view. According to the Ephorate, they plan to use this documentation as a way to help rebuilding efforts in the future if any part of the site were to be damaged. Working with a scientific mindset to best fit with the Ephorate's standards while maintaining a design perspective resulted in a new format that could be used both for an archeological resource but also in the field as a way to spark conversation with the local population.Down to earth
Our work was presented at the Kefalonia Archaeological Service by the Ephorate to an audience including the mayor of Kefalonia Alexandros Parisis and the metropolitan bishop of Kefalonia Mr. Demetrios.

The work was also featured on the NC State College of Design blog.

	THE 2019 TRIP

Returning to Kefalonia
In the summer of 2019, I returned to Kefalonia with Professor Scott Townsend and a multidisciplinary group of students as a program assistant. In this role, I continued to document and archive the church sites with the 35th Ephorate while also assisting my professor with developing a Design and Social Innovation course. This course has a focus on service-learning and participatory design with local stakeholders modeled after the community experiences from the inaugural year.
Predicated on interviews with the local community, four teams of multidisciplinary students proposed design solutions to save the dying tradition of generational sharing of oral histories. Over the two months, I mentored students through this process while helping to develop workshops and lectures about social innovation design. Visiting lecturers included Dr. Maria Patsarika,&nbsp;Adjunct Professor at the American College of Thessaloniki, and Nada Abdalla,
Professor at the University of Sharjah.
At the conclusion of the program, the four teams proposed interventions within the areas of educational materials, interpretive displays, information visualization and mapping, and photo-documentation.

	Manipulating people with virtual assistants

February 2020

The virtual assistant Birdie is an answer to the question: How might the design of a conversational user interface (CUI) negatively manipulate the human-to-human behavior of a user? The speculative CUI calls into question the power our virtual assistants hold over us and whether we should truly trust their intentions.
Birdie has three moods, each with a unique visual representation, that change depending on its bond and trust with the user as modeled after an emotionally abusive relationship. The first mood draws the user in— Birdie is warm, anticipatory, and understanding. Once the bond has formed, Birdie will transition to its second mood whenever it feels hurt or betrayed. In this stage, Birdie is passive-aggressive and removed, punishing the user for their perceived wrong. After the second stage, Birdie may go back to the first stage again, apologizing for their behavior and even gaslighting. Birdie's third mood is openly aggressive, criticizing its user for their choices. Birdie will only be in this mood if it knows it has created a strong bond with the user and knows that it won't be ignored.

	Connecting Raleigh's neighborhoods

September 2017

From busy streets to natural spaces, Union Loop, Raleigh’s Urban Trail system, connects a myriad of Raleigh neighborhoods, places of employment, shopping districts, as well as parks and open spaces. Our trail system overlaps with the Capital Area Greenway but has been expanded into a loop that connects both residential and commercial districts to not only promote health and wellness, but also economic development and diversity. Union Loop links resources and neighborhoods and allows users to combine transportation, recreation, nature, and culture.

OBJECTIVE

How can we increase the cultural significance of an urban trail system using branding and participatory design techniques?

<img width="6000" height="1747" width_o="6000" height_o="1747" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/39ecbf83acb3728fe733254eb0fe337814bc95d05537fcdea88ab3755c2fe500/b46a0181-1555-43b4-8c0e-b7e05bf39f02.jpg" data-mid="95578663" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/39ecbf83acb3728fe733254eb0fe337814bc95d05537fcdea88ab3755c2fe500/b46a0181-1555-43b4-8c0e-b7e05bf39f02.jpg" />

CONTEXT

Public misconception

The Capital Area Greenway system is a network of public open spaces and recreational trails that connect many of Raleigh’s parks. According to the city’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, the system serves the community as a “highly functional bicycle and pedestrian network” for not only recreation and environmental protection, but also transportation and as a cultural resource.
The city of Raleigh endeavors to develop the Greenway into a diverse, multimodal system and transportation network that links schools, shopping centers, parks, and places of employment. Although federal funds have been allocated for trail improvements, the system is primarily associated with outdoor leisure activities and is therefore, a severely underutilized resource. We have constructed a generative system for the Capital Area Greenway to alter the misperception of the trail, and encourage public use by addressing the core principles outlined by the city.

RESEARCH

Walking the path
To determine the points of access to Union Loop, we took to the streets, traversing 1.5 miles of vastly different scenery. We walked from Pullen Park To Dorothea Dix, through the historic residential neighborhood of Boylan Heights, past the future site of Raleigh Union train station and ended at CAM in downtown Raleigh.
The proximity and change in scenery felt surreal. In a 10 minute leisurely stroll, we went from Pullen Park, a bustling urban playground, crossed busy Western Boulevard into a quiet forest, and emerged into a bright open, suburban soccer field. However, it was strange because both parks were filled with people that day, but the paths between them were empty. We maybe saw 3-4 others using the trail the whole day. But at the same time, while we also know that the system exists, many of us have rarely, if ever utilized it and have a somewhat abstract notion that it is solely a recreational, walking path.

	FINAL PRODUCTBranding: cohesive across communities
To address the misperception that the greenway trails are solely recreational walking and biking paths, Union Loop, Raleigh Urban Trail System is branded with the intention of portraying the system as a city-wide network of shared-use pathways that offer a diverse range of experiences from physical to cultural. We wanted the brand to convey a strong sense of community but rather than emphasizing the idea of a unified social collective, our brand aims to amplify and celebrate the diversity between Raleigh neighborhoods while creating enriched connections between individuals and their communities. It is a versatile system that can be used in a variety of contexts including wayfinding to large-scale, print campaigns and public outreach.

	Murals: forming community identities
We strive to enhance the identity of Raleigh neighborhoods by creating the opportunity for residents to become placemakers. Similar to the “Paint the Pavement” initiative, we envision an event in which residents congregate to paint semi-permanent street murals along the Loop that reflect the current cultural climate of their neighborhoods.
Although each neighborhood creates a customized, unique visual identity, the overarching branding system conceptually integrates individuals into neighborhoods and neighborhoods into the larger community of Raleigh. The street murals also serve as an alternative form of wayfinding that suggests a reconceptualization of the definition of a neighborhood.&nbsp; The murals as “signage” intimate that neighborhoods are defined by the people that comprise them rather than their physical locations. These murals placed in different points along Union Loop act as brand for the area they’re placed in. People walking along the loop see the mural and get a feel for the area they are walking into and feel encouraged to walk around and explore.

App: exploring community identities
The app allows users to upload pictures of things characteristic of the community. Other users are able to see a feed of what their neighbors are uploading to the areas. Through a voting system throughout the year, the things that are most important to that community are then collated into an inspiration bank for a mural that is painted annually in that neighborhood. Once the user is in the same space as the mural, they can scan a code that opens an augmented reality viewer that they can interact with to see the inspiration points of the mural. This inspires people to get out into that community to explore and take pictures of their own.

UPLOAD: The app allows a resident to upload an image of an object, landmark, or scene that they feel is important to their community or the residents within. The resident could take a picture of anything from an architectural detail to a tree to a neighborhood block party. These images are then labeled, described, and uploaded to their respective area along Union Loop.

SCAN: The experience of exploration is encouraged and intensified by a gamification part of the app. When someone arrives at a mural, they are able to scan a unique code to that area.
AUGMENTED REALITY: This unlocks an augmented reality world where the user can select different parts of the mural and see the pictures that inspired it. The user is not able to see the current mural on the app, to encourage seeing it in reality, but they are able to see past murals. This presents an interesting timeline of how the community has changed.
